An impressive oak forest extending over 11,000 hectares which has partly been planted by humans. This forest is among the eleven most important forests of France, 70% of its trees are oaks. You will find legendary oak trees that are 200 to 300 years old.
With an impressive height of 37 m, the ‘Chêne Stebbing’ is not just the tallest tree in the Forêt de Tronçais, but in fact the tallest sessile oak in all of Europe. The oak wood from Tronçais has been used for the production of oak barrels for hundreds of years. The barrels are primarily used for maturing cognac and red wine. The forest is crossed by long lanes intended to facilitate hunting. In the Middle Ages the forest was owned by the dukes of Bourbon who used it for hunting. The Fôret de Tronçais offers great variety with its unexpected views of lakes, shrubbery and estates. Within the forest and at its edges you will find several lakes. The Ètang de Pirot has sunbathing, swimming and water sports facilities. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife such as wild boar, roe and red deer and many smaller animals. There is also a wide variety of bird species, including many species of owl. The Forêt de Tronçais website will provide you with more information. |
