Réserve Naturelle de Val d'Allier
This nature reserve measures about 1450 hectares on both banks of the Allier river between the towns of Moulins and Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule. The area has an abundance of natural richness, but is fragile, so strict rules apply to exploring the reserve.
The Auvergne has hundreds of volcanoes. Long ago, the heart of the Auvergne must have been simmering with volcanic activity. The present landscape is formed by remnants of these active volcanoes. It has large craters (puy), rounded tops (dôme) and every stage of volcano in between. This is the largest nature reserve in France.
An impressive oak forest extending over 11,000 hectares which has partly been planted by humans. This forest is among the eleven most important forests of France, 70% of its trees are oaks. You will find legendary oak trees that are 200 to 300 years old.
